Report on SPU Natural Drainage Walking Tours
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has the report below about the walking tours in Broadview last week.
Dear Broadview Neighbor,
Thank you to everyone who joined one of our walking tours on Saturday, Nov. 3! We are grateful so many of you joined us in the wind and rain to share your thoughts about natural drainage systems (NDS)! Overall, about 50 people stopped by to talk with us.
We shared two preliminary NDS concepts with the community and a map of all the possible feasible locations for NDS. Over the next few months, we will start to identify which concept may apply to which block, and where the NDS systems will go. We’ll be considering the feedback we received from specific property owners, the location of above-ground and underground utilities, the location of mature trees, technical feasibility, soil conditions and other factors. We hope to share more details in the first quarter of 2019.
Here are some key themes that we heard on Saturday:
-
- Strong support for natural drainage systems (NDS)
- Desire to maintaining as much parking as possible, particularly near property owners’ homes
- Need to address pedestrian and bicycle safety through NDS design
- Interest in understanding impacts and timing of construction
- Request to reduce impervious surfaces wherever possible
- Desire for sidewalks (Note: The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) decides when and where to put in sidewalks. If you want more information about their Sidewalk Program, please email walkandbike@seattle.gov or call 206-684-7583. If you’re interested in petitioning the City to put in sidewalks in your neighborhood, one of the most direct ways is to apply for Your Voice, Your Choice funding. Learn more here.)
If you or a neighbor were not able to attend the event, we welcome your feedback or questions about the proposed concepts or project via email (spu_broadviewprojects@seattle.gov) or phone (206) 409-3651. You can review the materials that were presented at the event on our website under the Project Documents tab.
